About Us: History
Hope Chinese Charter School will be the first public Chinese immersion school in the Beaverton School District. The dream for this school first began in 2010, in the Saturday language classes offered at Oregon Hope Chinese School (OHCS). Parents saw their children blossom in the Chinese classes, and realized they wanted something more. Parents approached Min Kong, Director of OHCS, and asked if she would help them start a Chinese immersion charter school. This group was the beginning of the Charter Design Team for HCCS. The team was made up completely of volunteers – people who felt passionately that a Chinese immersion education would greatly benefit their children and the community. These volunteers donated hundreds of hours and private funding for the dream of offering Chinese immersion to local students.
OHCS Involvement
OHCS is a non-profit organization focused on teaching Mandarin Chinese. It began as a Saturday School in 2005. Since then, OHCS has added a Chinese immersion preschool program, Mandarin Kids, to meet the growing demand for bilingual education. OHCS leveraged its expertise and strong relationships with Chinese educators to help develop the charter school's comprehensive immersion program.
HCCS credits the passionate parents, educators, sponsors and OHCS for igniting the dream and carrying it forward. We thank Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School for trailblazing the path as the first language immersion charter school in the Beaverton School District.. We also thank our partners at the Beaverton School District who provided their time and expertise to strengthen our development plan, a critically important first step for launching our program.
